About North Chatham Free Library

Our library dates to 1886 when a local resident, Bessie Peck, was instrumental in the formation of a Chautauqua Society.

A Chautauqua Assembly or simply Chautauqua, was an adult education and social movement in the United States that peaked in popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and brought entertainment and culture for the whole community, with speakers, teachers, musicians, showmen, preachers, and specialists of the day.

North Chatham Free Library was chartered in 1915, where it has been a gathering place for members of the community, sponsoring diverse programs throughout the year for all ages to learn and grow.

Our mission is to enrich the quality of life for a diverse and growing community of all ages. We are dedicated to encouraging a love of learning and an appreciation of libraries by providing resources, services, and programs, which enhance literacy, education, and life skills, as well as promoting arts and culture. Our programs are provided free or for a nominal cost to patrons.
