Thirteen communities throughout New York State have achieved certification as part of the NYSDEC Climate Smart Communities Program. In this program, communities who are working to meet the economic, social, and environmental challenges due to climate change are supported and recognized as leaders.

According to the NYSDEC, Beacon was originally certified bronze but after making significant changes such as having almost all electricity used by the city government offset by a solar farm on a closed landfill and having nearly 70 percent of it's residents opting for 100 percent renewable electricity through a community choice program, they have been awarded silver certification.

Beacon, along with Homer, Mount Kisco, Sleepy Hollow and Yonkers also included work towards environmental justice addressing challenges in underserved and economically disadvantaged communities.

Another distinction that Beacon has is being designated as a Clean Energy Community under NYSERDA's program that helps local governments save energy costs and more.

Congratulations on a job well done Beacon!
