41 seniors from Summit Academy Charter School in Brooklyn just received the surprise of their lives. Thanks to “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and Walmart, none of the students will not have to worry about finding a way to pay for college. Ellen shared the news when the students were guests on her show recently. She announced that the retailer was offering to pay for the entire senior class to go to college.
The Brooklyn community of Red Hook, where Summit Academy is located, is one of the most under served areas - only 4% of adults there have a college degree or any any college education at all, according to school administrators. Despite that, 93% of Summit’s class of 2016 went to college. And this year, they’re hoping it’s 100%.
These scholarships, which are good for a four-year degree from any New York state university, can help make that happen. As you can imagine, the kids were shocked and thrilled with the amazing news. Congratulations to these seniors!
