Last week's multi-network “Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Harvey Relief” telethon to raise money for recent hurricane victims was a huge "success." More than $55-million was raised for Hurricane Harvey and Irma relief. The remaining $41-million came in donations made after the telethon went off the air last Tuesday, September 12th.
The hour-long benefit was broadcast live from Los Angeles, New York City, and Nashville.
In addition to the three cities mentioned above, George Strait (photo above) performed a benefit concert as part of the telethon for hurricane victims at the Majestic Theater in San Antonio, Texas the same evening. He was joined on stage by his friends Miranda Lambert, Chris Stapleton, Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen.
Country stars and a "Who's Who" list of celebrities used their star power to help raise funds including; Al Pacino, Justin Timberlake, Leonardo DiCaprio, Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx, Sofia Vergara, Billy Crystal and many others performed and/or answered phones.
Verizon has a partner in underwriting the whole event in the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, so a hundred percent of the money will go to the hurricane victims. And Dell matched the first $10 million dollars, and Apple donated $5 million bucks.
17 networks, including the big four networks – CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox – and MTV, BET, Bravo, Oxygen, and HBO aired the telethon live plus a live stream on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
