The Hudson Valley region is currently experiencing a moderate spread of the flu, according to recent data. Westchester County has the highest number of cases with 115, followed by Rockland County with 32. Orange County is third on the list with 17 cases, and Dutchess County has reported eight cases.

Flu season typically runs into May, but illnesses begin to surge once the weather gets colder. Experts are urging residents to take proper precautions to avoid getting sick and spreading the virus to others.

According to the New York State Department of Health, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized with flu complications each year in the U.S. Those most at risk for complications from the flu include pregnant women, adults age 50 and older, children under the age of five and their caregivers, residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, and anyone who has certain underlying medical conditions.

Residents are encouraged to get a flu vaccine, which is recommended for everyone six months of age and older. Flu shots are available for a fee from many area pharmacists, medical offices, and neighborhood health centers.
